Chapter Sixteen

“I loved the human world from the first time I was old enough to be aware of it as a place different from the Fae world,” she said. “I like…movie theaters. Coffee drinks. Watching soccer games in the parks. Visiting castles, gardens. Places where human history happened.” Her gaze slid down, touched on her dress. “I like the clothes. The shoes.”

He thought of Ruth and his mother, looking at those Oscar dresses. He curled an arm around Catriona, shifted so they leaned against the rail together, her against him. As he stroked her waist below the wings, it seemed to help, though her eyes were focused on his chest, as if she couldn’t relay the story as well while meeting his gaze.

“At first, others, including Kel, interpreted my interest like…what do humans call it? A vacation, seeing different things, a different way of life from your own. But as time went on, it became clear my desire to be here instead of in my own world…I couldn’t explain it. It was almost like I fit better here.”

She shook her head. “Lord Keldwyn said he thought my mother’s soul was attached to a time when humans and Fae were more closely aligned, before so many bad things happened. He believed she left me that legacy.”

The pained smile she offered said her Fae protector didn’t necessarily consider that a good thing. “Once I was in my teens, Kel’s responsibilities to the Fae courts kept him traveling a great deal. Maysie, the woman who oversaw my care in his absence, loved me, but as I said, she had other children. Younger ones. So, though it was not advisable for me to spend as much time here…I did. Several times, I was admonished for it.”

He wanted to hold her closer, but he expected that might distract her from the story. He could tell she wouldn’t want to prolong the telling, any more than he would his own story.

“I ignored the warning signs,” she said, low. “The Fae court advisors were seeing problems between the human and Fae worlds that made them advocate more restrictions on passage between the worlds, harsher punishments for those who disregarded those already in place. Queen Rhoswen and King Tabor were listening.”

She took a breath. “They made it more difficult to travel the portals without permission, but they couldn’t completely close them. There’s an energy feed between the two worlds that can’t be sealed without detriment.”

An interesting fact he didn’t know. “So you knew how to get through.”

“Yes. I was shown by another Fae. Clunie. He was much older than me.” Her mouth tightened. “I should have questioned his friendship, but I did not.”

He noticed the deeper she moved into her story, the more formal her language was becoming, reminding him Fae was her first language. He wondered if it was like his mother’s Irish Gaelic. Or Scottish.

When he mentioned that, her smile became a bit easier. Her brief flash of gratitude told him she recognized the effort to remind her of the here and now, to ease the intensity of the story she was telling.
